Breadth is the share of a sector's measured assets whose return beat Bitcoin's. Broad is 60% or more, narrow is under 40%. Leaders are ranked by 30-day return against Bitcoin; linked tickers have a comparison page. Sectors overlap, so rows are not parts of a whole.

01

Breadth, not market cap

Every asset counts once. A sector led by a single large token shows a low reading here even when its market cap is rising.

02

Measured against Bitcoin

An asset counts when it gained more, or lost less, than Bitcoin. A sector can be falling in dollars and still read as broad.

7-day breadth above the 30-day figure means participation is recent. The 200-day column shows whether it has lasted.

What sector breadth says today

On October 16, 2026, 6 of 8 sectors have at least half of their tracked assets ahead of Bitcoin over 30 days. By sector: AI 81%, DeFi 70%, DePIN 67%, Real-World Assets 63%, Layer 1 62%, Layer 2 56%, Gaming 49%, Memecoins 23%.

AI has the widest participation at 81% of 48 assets, and Memecoins the narrowest at 23% of 48. The market-wide 30-day Altcoin Season Index, which covers the 50 largest altcoins regardless of sector, reads 64/100.

7-day breadth is more than ten points below the 30-day figure in AI, DeFi, DePIN, Real-World Assets, Layer 1, Layer 2, Gaming, where participation has narrowed over the last week.

Breadth counts assets, not dollars: a sector can gain market cap because one large token rallied while most of its members trail Bitcoin. Sectors also overlap, since CoinGecko lists one token in several categories, so the rows are not parts of a whole and should not be added together.

Sector breadth questions

Which crypto sector is outperforming Bitcoin?
AI has the widest 30-day breadth on October 16, 2026: 81% of its 48 tracked assets beat Bitcoin.
What does sector breadth measure?
The share of a sector’s largest eligible assets whose return beat Bitcoin’s over the same window. 60% means six in ten outperformed Bitcoin, whether or not their dollar prices rose.
Which assets are counted in each sector?
Up to the 50 largest assets in the matching CoinGecko category, after removing stablecoins, wrapped and staked tokens and tokenised funds or commodities. A sector needs at least five measured assets to get a reading.
Why is there no 90-day sector breadth?
A 90-day return needs a separate price history request for every asset. The sector table uses the 7-day, 30-day and 200-day returns that arrive with the market data, so it can refresh several times a day.
