How to Read Bitcoin Dominance
Understand what Bitcoin dominance measures, why it rises and falls, and how to combine it with altcoin relative performance.
Bitcoin dominance measures Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market value. It is useful, but it is not a standalone trading system.
When dominance rises
Rising dominance often means Bitcoin is outperforming the wider market. This can happen during Bitcoin-led rallies and during risk-off selloffs when altcoins fall faster.
When dominance falls
Falling dominance can indicate capital rotation into altcoins, but it can also reflect growth in stablecoins or a narrow move in Ethereum. Market breadth confirms whether the rotation is widespread.
A better reading framework
- Check the direction of Bitcoin dominance.
- Check the Altcoin Season Index for broad relative strength.
- Review which sectors and assets are leading.
- Compare short and long time windows.
